BREXIT has caused the UK economy to spin in a "downward spiral", a north-east MSP has said.

A new forecast from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which shows the UK is set to have the lowest economic growth performance of all G20 economies apart from Russia.

SNP MSP for Banffshire and Buchan Coast Karen Adam said it was further proof that post-Brexit Britain was set on a downward economic spiral, which Scotland needs to escape.

She said: “The fact that the UK is ahead of only sanctions-hit Russia, of all the G20 economies, exposes the scale of the downward spiral that is being inflicted on us as a result of exiting the EU, over a decade of UK austerity, endless cuts, and decades of Westminster governments Scotland didn't vote for.

“This appalling forecast is the result of the UK leaving the EU, over a decade of UK inflicted austerity, and decades of UK governments Scotland simply didn't vote for.

"Leaving the EU was imposed on Scotland, ripping us out of a market seven times bigger than the UK – but Scotland does still have hope for a brighter future.

“Ensuring that we are able to exercise our democratic right to vote for a better world is more crucial than ever so we can create a fairer, thriving Scotland for all as an independent country."
