AIMING to raise a smile and awareness of oral health has been the task of dental staff in Moray over the last two weeks.

As part of National Smile Month, NHS Grampian staff have been carrying out a Child Smile roadshow across the district.

They have seen hundreds of children and given parents lots of advice on oral hygiene and providing help to register youngsters with a dentist.

Anne Cousins, oral health improvement co-ordinator, Margaret Bayley, dental health support worker and Anne Lowe, dental nurse, have been promoting the Child Smile message.

They gave away free toothbrushes, toothpaste, water bottles, timers and Tommee Tippee training cups.

Childsmile is a national programme designed to improve the oral health of children in Scotland and reduce inequalities both in health and access to dental services. "Childsmile is a roll out programme. At the moment we are targeting the Buckie, Keith and Speyside area and are starting to roll out into Elgin," said Anne Cousins.

Margaret Bayley said parents were more aware of the support available now from Child Smile, which was launched two years ago.

"We have raised the profile a lot by doing oral health talks in schools. There are toothbrushing programmes in most nurseries now," she added.
