Findochty White Mannie statue appeal sees ‘amazing’ community response to fundraiser
An appeal for funds to help repair an iconic statue has met with an impressive community response.
Since 1959 Findochty Harbour has been synonymous with the White Mannie statue, which depicts a fishermen sitting looking out towards the sea.
It was created by local artist Correna Cowie.
However, time and the elements have been taking their toll leading Findochty Community Council (FCC) to launch a fundraising appeal to pay for the repairs. The response from villagers has left the group blown away.
FCC chairwoman Anne Braidwood said: “We originally set a crowdfunding target of £1000, but in three days we already had a total of £1400.
“We’re all delighted with the response, it’s just amazing and the community really dug deep very quickly to support this. It’s blown us away, really.
“The White Mannie is very important to the local community and it’s something they’re really proud of.
“The plinth is the part that really needs repairs - the concrete is coming away and there are holes emerging in it.
“A local businessman has also very kindly offered to give the statue itself full clean and repaint and the railings in front of it using high-quality acrylic latex paint to protect it against the elements.
“The work will get under way as soon as we get the money released and hopefully the Mannie will be ready in time for the tourists coming in summer.”
The statue also has an inscription from the Bible on it’s base - Psalm 17:24, “These saw the works of the Lord and his wonders of the deep”.
