‘An antidepressant on two wheels': New Elgin charity Get on a Bike brings joy back to the community
A group of Elgin cyclists have formed a charity to support local people living with stress, depression or ill-health.
Get on a Bike has been set up by five friends who know from their own experiences how much cycling can lift someone’s mood.
Operating out of Cooper Park, the charity is already getting referrals from individuals and local health professionals.
Spokesperson Sheila Scott said: “We are already getting positive results with a number of people of different ages getting onto a bike for the first time in years and slowly building their confidence.
“The support we have had has been amazing.
“We obtained our original stock of bikes and accessories from Scottish Cycling.
“The funding is through the National Lottery Awards for All, plus Moray Council, Alpkit and a local company. Without their input we would have struggled to get off the ground.”
The volunteers have bikes and helmets for anyone referred to them. Rides can be arranged on a one-on-one basis or as a group trip around Elgin.
‘Deborah’ had been off work suffering from stress when her health worker suggested she might contact Get on a Bike.
She said: “In my teenage years I had an accident where I went over the handlebars while going downhill, and that had put me off cycling ever since.
“Get on a Bike got in touch and we arranged to meet up for a cuppa and chat.
“We cycled slowly to a café. But on the way back I sped up and was whooping in delight at how liberating it felt.
“It was like breaking invisible chains which had held me back for months.
‘Deborah’ has since bought a bike, started cycling in her spare time and is looking at getting back to work.
She adds: “I would never have had the confidence to do this before. I’ve made new friends as well as finding a new hobby.
“It’s been like an antidepressant on two wheels.”
As well as being referred by a GP or health professional, it’s also possible to message Get on a Bike’s Facebook page or email admin@getonabike.org.uk to arrange a chat and see the bikes available.
