Anger over Findhorn beach huts go-ahead

A PROPOSAL to build 30 beach huts on the shoreline at Findhorn has been approved.

Members of Moray Council’s planning and regulatory services committee voted by eight to six in favour of the development at a meeting on Tuesday.

Officers had recommended refusal of the application put forward by 1 Architects Ltd, on the grounds that the 30 colourful huts would detract from the amenity of the beach and the unspoilt open character of the area.

There were 175 letters of objection, mainly from people living in the Findhorn and Forres areas, including one from Findhorn and Kinloss Community Council.

However, neither Scottish Natural Heritage or the Scottish Environment Protection Agency objected to the proposal, nor did the council’s development plans section that stated the beach huts could significantly enhance Findhorn as a tourist destination.

Ian Sutherland McCook, managing director with 1 Architects was pleased with the decision.

He said: "We have a lot of confidence in the planning process with this going to the planning committee. Generally, they are thoroughly considered and that was executed fully and it was passed although it was quite a close vote.

"I look forward to working with the community to get this project completed and hopefully see it become a success."
