Aquarium proving popular with post-lockdown visitors
THE crowds have been flooding back to Macduff Marine Aquarium since it reopened last month to the public.
Manager Claire Matthews said: “We had a slowish start the first week, but that built up to the May Day weekend when we were fully booked. Since then we have been fully booked at weekends and extremely busy through the week.”
“Up to 240 people a day is our maximum to allow for social distancing. People can go online and book slots.
“We still have the two metre rule in place, so can’t do our interactive dive and feed shows, but it is still a really enjoyable visit. We used lockdown to gut and refresh the tanks, and put up new wall panels.”
The nine members of staff are delighted to be back welcoming visitors, although they spent lockdown looking after the fish.
Recent arrival Cedric the flapper skate has proved popular, a species which is rarer than giant pandas and are close to extinction in Scottish waters.
School visits are off the menu for now, however, the aquarium has used social media to stay engaged with pupils.
