MORAY'S over 55s enjoyed a mindful morning ramble at Elgin's Quarrel Wood on Brumley Brae this month.

Local guide, Paul Kendall, from Wild Things Environmental Education in Action, led a gentle foraging walk through the woods, frying up some chanterelle mushrooms and serving acorn coffee along the way. Elgin walkers also learned how to use natural materials like papery Birch bark to light a campfire and moss to dress a wound.

The free Nature Forage Walk was part of First Time for Everything, a programme designed by the Royal Voluntary Service and supported by players of People's Postcode Lottery. The programme gives people an opportunity to try something new for free in their local community.

According to a pre-pandemic survey, 93 per cent of respondents said they felt happier after attending a First Time for Everything event and 75 per cent felt more connected to their local community.

Sharon Finlay, Royal Voluntary Service activity co-ordinator for Moray, said: "We had a lovely time, despite the wet weather. The mushrooms went down well but it was a mixed response for the acorn coffee! Paul also helped us recognise birds from their calls and spoke about some of the wildlife in the area. Thanks to support from players of People's Postcode Lottery, we'll be offering a wide range of exciting First Time for Everything activities each month at different locations around Moray."

The next First Time for Everything event in Moray will be an afternoon of music and singing with local musician, Ian Fraser, on Friday, November 19 at 2pm in Duffus Village Hall. Booking is essential as places are limited.
