A MORAY mum had Georgia on her mind considerably earlier than she expected, after being forced to give birth to her new daughter in the back of the family camper van.

Little Georgia Read was delivered last Wednesday, but rather than mother Alison (39) having all the mod-cons of the Elgin maternity ward at her disposal, she went through the entire process in her front driveway.

Luckily, the medical professionals arrived three minutes before 6lb 13oz Georgia made her grand entrance into the world.

And it was a fortunate escape for husband Al (39), who would otherwise have had to switch from his role as a simulator instructor at RAF Lossiemouth to that of midwife.

Alison said she realised at 1am she was in labour and went to sit in a bath to help with the contractions. The couple decided to drive from their Lossie home to hospital at 2am, and chose the Toyota camper van instead of the car just in case Al had to make an emergency stop en-route to Dr Gray’s Hospital. It was a wise decision.

“As soon as I sat in the camper van my waters broke and I said ‘we are not going anywhere – I can feel it happening’,” said Alison.

Al phoned 999 but was told the ambulance was eight minutes away. “It was one of those ‘oh no’ moments, but there was a picnic blanket in there so we decided to make the best of it. We pulled that out. I could see the head as the ambulance arrived.”

“But I am glad the ambulance turned up,” he said.

The family headed to Dr Gray’s and Georgia had suffered no ill-effects, and the couple are delighted to report that she is eating and sleeping well.
