Buckie High kids rise to the occasion as Great Bake Off returns

A high school bake off contest has proved to have the recipe for success.

It was wooden spoons at the ready at Buckie Community High School (BCHS) recently when they held their second inter-House Great Bake Off contest.

Run by five students from the Higher Leadership class in conjunction with the HE department, the challenge attracted a wide entry from across the school.

Given the difficult task of choosing a winner were guest judge Richard Simpson, from Simpson’s Ice Cream, and BCHS HE teacher Faye Lowe.

Emerging triumphant from a very close contest were Grace Rigby and Daisy Main. The reward for their efforts were wooden spoons engraved by the school’s Technical department, a £15 spend anywhere voucher each from the school and two £10 vouchers donated by Mr Simpson.

Stefan Wojcik, who teaches the Higher Leadership group, said: “It all went very well, we’re very pleased with it.

“Around 50 pupils entered drawn from S1-6 and the Special Education Department, so it was a very inclusive competition for everybody. The number of places on the bake off filled up very quickly and we had to turn people away.

“All of the teams were given the recipe for the Victoria sponge but they had to bring their own decorations for the cake. There were a lot of very creative designs, they were all different.

“Each of the entries were judged on three things: Taste; Quality of the sponge; and decoration.

“It was quite a searching task to find the winner.”

Praising the winners and entrants, Mr Simpson commented: “The standard of entries was very high and the variety of decorations was great, as well.

“The presentation of the entries was just superb.

“It was very hard to decide the winner due to the quality of the entrants.”

The event was the second such bake off contest at BCHS organised by the Leadership student.

Mr Wojcik continued: “It’s proved to be a very popular event - we could’ve done it two or three times over this year, we were turning people away.

“As part of their course, the Higher Leadership class have to organise an event either in the school or the community and they decided to do a bake off last year, which has proved very successful.

“Apart from having a lot of fun it’s good experience of working in a team. Hopefully it will also give them them the bug for baking.”
