The Prime Minister stood down this morning after immense pressure from members of his own government, more than 50 of whom resigned in the 48 hours leading up to his departure.

Mr Ross has publicly called for Mr Johnson to resign on more than one occasion, most recently in May, although he did back the Prime Minister after Russia invaded for Ukraine, calling for more stability.

After his resignation this morning, Mr Ross said: "It is right that the prime minister has resigned.

"Several weeks ago I voted that I didn't have confidence in the prime minister, since then more colleagues have reached the same conclusion.

"With so many members of the cabinet and ministers resigning, it was clear the only option available to the prime minister was to announce his own resignation.

"It is now important that the next prime minister is able to unite people around their plans to tackle the big issues that we face as a country and deliver for the United Kingdom."

Boris Johnson could continue as Prime Minister until October as a leadership contest gets underway.

The Prime Minister has visited Moray twice since 2019, once prior to his election, when he visited Roseisle Maltings, and once after, when he visited RAF Lossiemouth, RAF Kinloss and Baxters.
