THE Buckie by-election has been won by Independent candidate Gordon Cowie.

Mr Cowie polled 1,034 votes, with Linda McDonald (SNP) attracting 710.

Marc Macrae (Independent) was eliminated at Stage 2 with 248 votes and Margaret Gambles (Scottish Conservative and Unionist) was out at Stage 1 with 143. The count took place this morning (Friday) at Buckie’s Fishermen’s Hall, with a turn-out of 24%.

Mr Cowie, who served on Buckie Community Council, joins Councillor Joe Mackay (Independent) and Councillor Gordon McDonald (SNP) in the three-member ward.

The vacancy was caused by the resignation of Independent Anne McKay, who stood down in November for personal reasons.
