Buckie charity runner to ask public on headshave fate
A BUCKIE charity fund-raiser is set to hold his latest event this coming Monday – and is giving the public the chance to decide what happens.
In our June 9 issue (Act of Kindness) local man Michael Parkes described his aim to raise money for the Meningitis Research Foundation by running in the New York marathon should it take place as planned this November.
However, in the meantime he has hit on a fund-raising scheme rather closer to home, and he is letting local people have their say in how it all pans out.
He said: "I doing at headshave at 7pm on Monday and I'm asking people to vote on Facebook which option they'd like me to do.
"The choice is between me doing half a haircut – shaving it right down the middle – or doing what I call a Krusty the Clown.
"This mean shaving the middle of my head and leaving a ring of hair round the outside, like a monk.
"Once I get the results in I'll do the headshave and post it live on Facebook.
"I've already raised over £650 on my Just Giving page for Meningitis Research, which is great. Thanks to everyone who has supported me so far."
Mr Parkes's training for the New York marathon continues, and to help brighten up his runs round Buckie has been taking photos of himself at 26 local landmarks, places of interest and street names.
These he has donated to Buckie Kindness Group's project to create an album of images capturing Buckie during the different phases of lockdown.
Mr Parkes's choice of charity has not come about by accident. Aged just 19, what he thought was just a bad hangover after a Friday night spent drinking with pals turned out to be the potentially deadly disease, which was to keep him hospitalised for eight days.
That was only the beginning of his long road to recovery, with it taking 18 months to a year to get over the physical effects of his illness. Some of the mental scars are sill with him in the shape of memory loss.
