A BUILDING firm has handed over a donation to the Elgin branch of the Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA).

Barratt Developments North Scotland donated £1000 as part of the housebuilder’s latest Community Fund giveaway.

Throughout the pandemic, Barratt Developments, which includes both Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, has continued its Community Fund efforts to donate £1000 to a deserving local cause in each of its three Scottish divisions every month.

Huntington’s disease is a hereditary neurological disease that affects around one in 5000 people in Scotland. It affects movement, cognition and mental health.

The SHA, which was founded by families in 1989, is the only charity in Scotland dedicated exclusively to improving the lives of people who are impacted by the disease.

Barratt’s donation will go towards the charity’s Moray branch to help local families. The charity provides specialist equipment and assistance with transport.

Sandra Myron, treasurer of SHA’s Moray branch, said: "On behalf of the SHA’s Moray family branch, I would like to say a huge thank you to Barratt for nominating us and the £1000 donation.

"This will go a long way to helping people in Moray affected by Huntington’s disease.

"Being a smaller charity we often get overlooked so it's reassuring to continue having support. Due to the Covid pandemic it has been a very difficult time for charities, so any monies forthcoming is a welcome boost."

David Palmer, managing director at Barratt Homes North Scotland, added: "SHA carries out brilliant work for families across Scotland, and in our area of Moray, thanks to their network of Huntington’s disease specialists. We hope that our donation will help them continue to provide these crucial and important services through what have been difficult times."

Now in its third year, the Barratt Developments North Scotland Community Fund has pledged to donate £1000 each month to a charity or organisation covering Inverness, Elgin, Aberdeen and Perth. Charities are nominated and voted for by employees.
