BUILDING got under way yesterday on the all-weather multi-sports facility at Lesser Borough Briggs in Elgin.

Having gained planning permission and court approval in August, Elgin Sports Community Trust was able to start the building process this week.

A full-size floodlit 3G football/rugby pitch and two five-a-side pitches are to be built on the site. All pitches will be fenced off, with three disabled parking spaces to be built outside.

The facility will be constructed by Volker Fitzpatrick, with the ESCT hoping it will be completed by summer.

However, the project continues to need financial support from the public.

ESCT trustee Simon Nesbitt said: "We are delighted to make a start on site.

"We are aiming to complete the works by summer 2021. However, we still need to raise funds to deliver the subsequent phases of the planned works.

"While we are in the midst of very challenging times, this project offers massive benefits to the local community.

"We would urge everyone to donate what they can to ensure the full success of the project."

Mr Nesbitt had plenty of local groups to thank as the project got under way.

He added: “Thanks in particular to Volker Fitzpatrick for taking on this project as part of their commitment to leave a legacy to the local area whilst delivering the upgrade of RAF Lossiemouth runways, and to Elgin City, who have kindly provided additional land to maximise what can be provided.

"Thanks also to Moray Council who have worked closely with ESCT during these challenging times to meet our programme.

"Our thanks also to our other partners including Mott MacDonald and MAC Consulting Limited, who have helped deliver planning approval and design.

"We are looking to engage with other local suppliers in the construction of the works and would urge any interested companies to contact us."

The footpath running behind Borough Briggs and towards Cooper Park will be closed until February 5 due to the works.
