Events in Moray: Burning of the Clavie in Burghead at 6pm tonight
This evening will see Burghead celebrate the Burning of the Clavie to mark the traditional date of New Year.
The famous fire festival is set to begin at 6pm when the clavie – an old whisky barrel full of staves – is set alight on Granary Street.
The Clavie Crew will then take it in turns to carry its 15-stone weight around the village's streets, following a set route and distributing smouldering staves to various households.
These are said to bring good luck for the rest of the year.
The clavie is then transported to Doorie Hill, a high sport in the village, where large amounts of extra fuel are added and it's allowed to burn out.
Britain adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752, which in the interests of accuracy knocked 11 days off the date.
However, according to the old Julian calender which it replaced, January 11 is the start of the year.
