Moray Citizens’ Advice role in spotlight as energy cap leaps 10 per cent

The importance of Moray’s Citizens’ Advice Bureau (CAB) has been highlighted amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.

The 10 per cent rise in the energy price cap and the scrapping of the Winter Fuel Allowance for pensioners has seen Councillor Jérémie Fernandes (Elgin North, SNP) emphasise the role played by CAB services and urged anyone facing financial difficulties to reach out for support.

He said: “[The] announcement about the 10 per cent hike in the energy price cap, coupled with the loss of the Winter Fuel Allowance for over 18,000 pensioners in Moray, will understandably cause concern for those already battling with rising bills as winter approaches.

“The Moray Citizens’ Advice Bureau offers invaluable support, helping people navigate issues related to benefits including pension credit, debt, financial planning and many others.

“I strongly encourage anyone who has questions or is feeling overwhelmed to get in touch with them.”

Mary Riley, Manager of Moray CAB, added: “Last year, we assisted around 2000 individuals, and we’re fully prepared to support even more this year.

“Our dedicated team is here to provide not only guidance but also practical support to those facing financial challenges. We understand that many people are feeling the pressure as costs rise, and we want to reassure them that they’re not alone.

“Whether it’s help with budgeting, understanding benefits, or tackling debt, we’re here to listen and offer the free, impartial and confidential assistance needed to navigate these tough times.”
