CHILDREN’S Hearings Scotland is looking for local people to volunteer and support children and young people in Moray.

The Highland and Moray Children’s Panel is seeking volunteer panel practice advisors, part of the local volunteer Area Support Team, which is the local leadership group. It is responsible for selecting and recommending panel members for appointment.

They also regularly observe panel members within children's hearings and give feedback so improvements can be made. They are there to ensure that the young person is at the heart of every decision made.

George Hogg, Highland and Moray volunteer area convener, said: "Panel practice advisors are an essential part of the children’s hearings system.

"They support panel members through observation and feedback, so that they can make the strongest possible decisions for infants, children, young people and families in Highland and Moray.

"It is an extremely worthwhile role, and I would encourage anyone with the skills of observation, communication and team work to apply and join our team."

Anne Dodds, volunteer panel practice advisor, said: "In my role as an observer I do not make any direct decisions in the children’s hearings. Instead I observe my panel member colleagues offering feedback and support.

"It is such a happy, satisfying experience to see families or young people who have been heard, respected and supported by panel members in hearings. Then I realise how valuable, worthwhile and effective the Children’s Panel can be.

"We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful resource to support children and families in Scotland."

In Highland and Moray a virtual information evening will take place on Wednesday, June 23, at 7.30pm. Email Carol Maragh on Carol.Maragh@highland.gov.uk for further information.

Full training is provided with the aim of enhancing skills in leadership, effective communication, managing conflict and influencing and negotiating.

In 2019/20, 30,363 children’s hearings were held across Scotland. There are a range of reasons that a child or young person may be referred to attend a children’s hearing. In the last year, approximately 84 per cent of all referrals were on care and protection grounds.
