Christmas cheer will light up Lossiemouth

LOSSIEMOUTH'S Christmas lights - which will burst into life on Saturday - have been dedicated to everyone in the town and especially those who have rallied to help people dealing with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lights chairman Iain Allan hopes the display will provide further festive cheer for people in need of a lift after a challenging 2020.

"We have bought some new lights so hopefully they will cheer people up a bit," he said.

A new feature this year is a Christmas tree on the esplanade which has been donated by Hopeman Christmas Trees of Keam Farm, Duffus.

Technical committee chairman Alan MacDonald and his team had to split themselves into smaller Christmas bubbles to put up the lights around the town.

With the job done, all that remains now is for the big switch on.

Lossie has become renowned for the large crowd it attracts to the town for its festive lights event, with a number of soap star celebrities performing the task over the years.

Last year it was down to Scotty the newshound, mascot of The Northern Scot, to do the job.

With covid restrictions this year, there will be no mass gathering on Saturday and instead the Lossiemouth Millennium Association will stream the lights going on live on its Facebook page from 4.30pm.

"Not having a celebrity last year allowed us to save some money," added Mr Allan, which we used to buy the new lights."
