Forres Christmas Lights Committee has invited Santa to flick the switch on Saturday

A group of volunteers braved the cold on Sunday, spending seven hours putting the town’s Christmas lights up.

Supported by a mechanical hoist supplied by AJ Engineering, 23 supporters of the Forres Christmas Lights Committee erected the displays through High Street from Forres House to Bridge Street.

After doing his bit, committee spokesperson, Alan Hunter, invited the community to the traditional switch-on event at the end of the month.

He said: “There’s a great atmosphere amongst the lads who put up the lights. We feel we’re doing something useful for the town that most people appreciate and enjoy.

“This year, we have a new display at Murdoch Brothers Butchers and the community centre also has lights outside for the first time.”

A Christmas tree - annually donated by Moray Estates and transported by Michael Gradon - will go up on Sunday, November 24.

The big Forres lights switch-on will take place at 5pm on Saturday, November 30.

Attendees who would like to take part in Santa’s procession are asked to be at Forres Town Hall by 4.30pm.

Wave Radio will provide music and entertainment outside the Tolbooth throughout the afternoon from 1.30pm; Kinloss Military Wives Choir will perform under the tree from 3.15pm; at 4.15pm, The Elgin City Band will also play music by the tree at 4.40pm - Forres and District Pipe Band will lead Santa and attending families from Forres Town Hall to the tree; then at 5pm, Santa will Switch on the lights.

“And Forres’ festive season will start!,” said Alan. “The event will finish with more music around the tree.”

High Street will be closed to traffic from 4-6pm. Changes to bus routes will be posted at bus stops.

Alan finished: “Weather permitting, Saturday's switch-on should be an enjoyable start to the festive season. There will be great entertainment and, most importantly, Santa will be there to to talk to the children.”
