SCORES of climate change protesters won a show of cross-party support from councillors today as they handed in a petition on the doorstep of Moray Council calling for it to declare a climate emergency.

Members of the Moray Extinction Rebellion group and counterparts from the Highlands were joined by local individuals, Moray College students and school pupils, making up a group around 70-strong, to call on councillors to "listen to the facts" on climate change. The group held banners, sang and handed out leaflets to passers-by.

A group of around 12 councillors were warmly applauded as they met the protesters outside for a good-natured petition handover.

Afterwards councillors Louise Laing and David Bremner put forward a notice of motion at a full council meeting to recommend a climate change group be formed.

Convener of Moray Council, Councillor Shona Morrison, said it was great to see people taking such action and added: "Up until now climate hasn't featured very heavily within the direction of the council. We're in the midst of re-doing our corporate plan and we're looking at our priorities – and climate is right up there."
