Coastal Creations crafters set to crown Buckie's jubilee festivities

THE Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations are set to be a crowning achievement for a group of Buckie crafters.
Clients from Coastal Creations, a charity which provides crafting opportunities for adults with learning difficulties or mental health issues, have been working hard to their mark on Buckie’s jubilee festivities on June 5.
The celebrations, which are being organised by Buckie’s Roots and Buckie Christmas Lights Committee, are set to focus on Cluny Square where the crafter team hope to literally be the jewel in the crown.
The group’s co-ordinator and co-founder Karen Hills said: “Buckie’s Roots, who we’ve worked with before, asked us if we would like to become involved in helping decorate the square for the jubilee party.
“Since then both our groups have been working on making crowns from wood and then painting and decorating them with jewels.
“The crowns will then go in the flower displays in Cluny Square for the jubilee celebrations.
“They’ve been absolutely loving it and can’t wait to see their crowns on display.”
Coastal Creations was founded by Ms Hills and David Jamieson, officially opening their doors on October 5 last year. Based in Buckpool Golf Club’s community hall, the charity runs two groups a week.
Ms Hills said: “We’ve both previously worked in services prior to setting up Coastal Creations and we felt that there was a gap in the market to offer different experiences for adults with learning difficulties or mental health issues.
“David has brought his woodworking skills to the group and we’re one of the few services in the area which aren’t run by the local authority.
“We were one of the first services to open after lockdown and are really keen to get back out into the community again and work with other local groups and firms. Lockdown has had it’s affect on what we do – the price of wood, for example, has gone up by around 60 per cent.”

The crowns lovingly crafted by the Coastal Creations team will take pride of place during Buckie’s day of jubilee celebrations, which are due to kick off at 12 noon and run through until 5pm.
A packed, fun-filled afternoon will feature something for young and old alike, including a wide variety of entertainment in the square, along with a fair, local charity stalls and raffles.
Teas, coffees and homebakes will be available at the event for £2.50.
