Forres Highland Games has been awarded £10k to improve storage at Grant Park

The organisers of an annual, local event in its 97th year have been awarded £10,000 generated by natural energy.

The Forres Highland Games (FHG) charity run by volunteer trustees will invest the money from the Berry Burn wind farm Community Fund in the removal and replacement of an asbestos cement roof sheeting on their equipment storage shed at Grant Park.

Games president, Fred Davidson, is delighted with the support.

He said: “It is a very generous award and much appreciated. We were awarded the full amount we applied for, representing approximately 40 per cent of the total cost of the job.”

He added: “The money will help with the cost of safely removing the leaking roof sheeting from our games storage shed.”

The old sheeting will be disposed of at a licenced tip, by professional, licenced contractors before being replaced with insulated profiled metal sheeting.

Rafford Scottish Country Dancing Club has also donated £250 towards the new sheeting. FHG will fund the remainder of the cost from further external funding or the committee’s reserves.

“We are still open to other funding application opportunities to help with the rest of the cost,” said Fred. “Any donations towards it would be very welcome!”

FHG’s committee is made up of 16 trustees but there is always room for more.

“All trustees abide by the rules and requirements of our written constitution,” explained Fred. “They must also be enthusiastic and community minded.

“Trustees enjoy being part of the team, planning and delivering one of the best Highland Games in Scotland. We are a friendly bunch and the number of volunteers who return each games weekend is testament to the buzz they get from helping deliver one of the highlights of Forres’ summer calendar.”

The event is also aided by around 50 volunteers plus judges, security staff, cleaners and more.

Planning for this year’s event on Saturday, July 5 is already underway.

“We look forward to seeing everyone there and fingers crossed for good weather!”
