Community Alert Day set to shine spotlight on dangers of vaping
THE potential pitfalls and other issues surrounding vaping are to take centre stage at this year’s Community Alert Day (CAD) at Buckie Community High School (BCHS).
Tuesday, June 11 will see P7 pupils from BCHS’s feeder primaries make their way to the school for a packed day of workshops and sports taster sessions, all designed to help them make healthier life choices.
The morning will kick off with a performance from Out of the Darkness (OOTD) theatre company with half the year group heading for workshops run by the Coastguard, the police and fire service as well as Exchange Counselling Service, who will focus on mental health and wellbeing.
While this is going on, the other half of the year group will enjoy some taster sessions highlighting the various sports and activities clubs available at the High School.
After lunch, the groups swap over.
Co-ordinating the event is BCHS depute rector Moira Taylor.
She said: “Every year we have a theme for CAD which mirrors national trends and is relevant to our pupils, helping them make better and healthier life choices
“This year the theme we’ve chosen vaping.
“It’s been in the news a lot and sparked a lot of debate nationally and it impacts pupils at Buckie High and even at primary schools, too.
“The Community Alert Day also kickstarts the transition programme for local P7 pupils and there’s an information event for the parents in the evening after CAD. It gives them a chance to mix with children from the other primary schools and get used to Buckie High.”
Mrs Taylor went on to express thanks on behalf of BCHS to Buckie Co-op for generously offering to provide water and fruit for the participants on the day.
Each of the kids attending will also receive a PE kitbag
The CAD was founded by local football coach, the late David ‘Parro’ Findlay, in 2011.
