The facility is one of seven due to shut for good under the local authority’s 2013 budget – the first step in a massive overhaul designed to save £30 million over four years.

An equality impact assessment for the library closure programme is now being carried out, meaning campaigners have been handed a slight reprieve.

They have vowed to fight on, with Dufftown residents out in force to show support for the facility.

Children and the elderly were among the 90 residents who visited the library on Tuesday morning, while a further 30 people turned out to attend the evening session.

Campaigner Debbie Moir said everyone in the town was determined to fight for the facility, with the event highlighting the strength of feeling.

“There was people of all ages there and all with the one aim – to save the library. Everyone joined in and there was a lot of kids there, all who had made their own banners.

“There is just general outrage over this. The council is just not listening,” she said.
