COUNCIL chiefs have welcomed construction progress at the new Keith Primary as the countdown to hand-over begins.

Forming part of the authority’s £50 million Public Private Partnership (PPP) project, the school is due to open at the end of October.

Convener of Moray Council, George McIntyre, said the facility – which provides pre-school and primary education for nearly 350 children – was "long overdue".

"The people of Keith have campaigned for some considerable time for a modern facility and we are now almost at the point of being able to deliver that," he said.

Officials also toured Elgin Academy, the second school in the PPP scheme, where project manager Andy Oliver said works are going to schedule.

"It is going to be an excellent facility which will address the needs of the modern curriculum, and we are very much looking forward to occupying the building when it is expected to open at the beginning of March," said director of education and social care, Sandy Riddell.
