A drink driving offence has led to a Cullen resident losing his job with Moray Council as well as his licence.

Alexander Ross was banned from the roads yesterday after he appeared at Elgin Sheriff Court.

The 54-year-old, who had no previous convictions, gave a reading of 81 when he was breathalysed – the legal limit is just 22.

Fiscal Depute Naomi Duffy-Welsh told the court that, on Thursday, June 2, police officers had spotted Ross consuming alcohol while sat in a lay-by on the B9018 road near Cullen.

He was traced about 20 minutes later at his home in Seatown.

Defence solicitor Matthew O'Neill stated his client used to be employed by Moray Council in a job that involved being able to drive.

The lawyer added that on the day of the offence Ross had decided "for a reason he can't explain" to stop and have a drink while returning from work.

Mr O'Neill said: "It was an extremely foolish decision taken be someone who has never appeared in court before."

Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood issued a £667 fine and a 12-month ban.
