The British Model Flying Association (BMFA) set their members the challenge for their 100th anniversary, asking the aircraft enthusiasts to create a new world record by sending all of their model planes into flight at once.

Amongst the hundreds of flying groups who took part was the Dallachy Aeromodellers, who gathered on their air field at 12 midday on May 15 to participate in the record breaking flight.

Chris Bodiam, Secretary of the Dallachy Aeromodellers said: "It is very exciting to be a part of setting a world record with BMFA members across the UK.

"There is no existing record to beat so we are setting a new record, it has never been attempted before but now technology has advanced and has made it possible to coordinate such an ambitious event."

At the airfield, many of the clubs members gathered to send their model aircrafts into flight with Mr Bodiam coordinating the event and recording the number of planes in the air.

It is believed that around 280 clubs took part nationwide, with between 2500 and 3000 model planes appearing in the skies over Britain all at once.

However although there is currently no record in place, the club will still have to wait to have their achievement officially confirmed.

Mr Bodiam said: "The participating clubs have five days to submit their declarations and pictures to be verified by Guinness World Records, so it will be next week before the final number and record is officially announced."
