THE sacrifices made by Canadians in two World Wars was honoured at a short service of remembrance to mark Canada Day earlier today.
Due to the restrictions regarding public gatherings imposed by the battle against Covid-19, the service at Dallachy Strike Wing memorial was a private affair.
Attending the event were Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Moray Alistair Monkman CBE DL MA (Air Commodore RAF, former Station Commander RAF Lossiemouth), Councillor Marc Macrae (Fochabers/Lhanbryde) and Squadron Leader Dougie Potter (Exectuive Officer RAF Lossiemouth Transition Team).
Following the short ceremony, Councillor Macrae said: "It is important that we remember those from across the commonwealth who have served their country in times of conflict.
"Today being Canada Day we especially remember those from across the Atlantic, some of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice, and many of whom returned home baring the scars of war.
“We will remember them.”
During World War II Dallachy was home to an RAF base where many Canadians, along with servicemen from across the Commonwealth, joined men from the UK.
Among the aircraft which flew from the base were Beaufighter fighter bombers, which played a key role in harassing Nazi shipping in the North Sea area during the conflict.
Nearby Bellie churchyard there is a special area where Commonwealth servicemen killed in action were laid to rest.
