Daniel Forsyth of The Northern Scot and other Moray and Grampian titles of Highland News and Media wins Highlands and Islands Photographer of the Year

MORAY photographer Daniel Forsyth was a winner at the Highlands and Islands Press Ball and Media Awards.

Daniel (28), is a staff photographer with The Northern Scot in Elgin and its sister papers in the Moray and Grampian group of Highland News and Media.

The former Elgin Academy pupil and Aberdeen College photography student, has been with Elgin's local newspaper and its other titles since September 2013.

Joe Millican and Chris Saunderson, joint content editors with The Northern Scot and other local titles, said: "We are delighted for Daniel who is a key member of the team. He produces consistently good pictures for our print and digital titles and this is a richly deserved award."

Top individual award of the night went to Orcadian chief reporter Sarah Sutherland who was named Diageo Journalist of the Year.

Another Highland News and Media employee, Alasdair Fraser, was named Reporter of the Year, winning the Jim Love Memorial Trophy, at the awards on Friday night in Inverness at the Kingsmills Hotel.

Newspaper of the Year is the Stornoway Gazette, whose joint editors Murray MacLeod and Brian Wilson were praised for revamping the newspaper.

Loch a Tuath News, which serves communities on the east coast of Lewis, won Community Newspaper of the Year.

Susy Macaulay of the The Press and Journal won Feature Writer of the Year and Stan Arnaud, Business Reporter of the Year for his articles in the Press and Journal. Stan has moved on to work in public relations with Morrison Media.

Angus Peter Campbell, West Highland Free Press, won the Bòrd na Gàidhlig award for Best Use of Gaelic, while his colleague Kirsty Watt made it a double for the West Highland Free Press by winning the new Highland Tourism Environment and Sustainability Award.

The Young Journalist of the Year Award and the Alex Main Trophy went to Abigail Taylor of Uist-based Am Paipear and Eilidh Davies of the BBC is Sports Reporter of the Year. Craig Christie from The Northern Scot and other Moray titles, was shortlisted in this category.

Jim Tait, recently retired News Editor of the Shetland Times, received the Barron Trophy for lifelong achievement in journalism.

Principal sponsor was Diageo, and a new sponsor this year, Highland Tourism provided additional support along with the Kane Partnership, Statkraft, Bord na Gaidhlig, Chivas Brothers, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the National Union of Journalists and Hub North Scotland.

The ball’s charity fundraising will benefit four local organisations, namely Alzheimer Scotland, Macmillan Cancer Support, Action for Children and the Journalists' Charity.

Business Reporter of the Year - Stan Arnaud, Press and Journal.

Best Use of Gaelic (Bòrd na Gàidhlig Award) - Angus Peter Campbell, West Highland Free Press.

Young Journalist of the Year (Alex Main Trophy) - Abigail Taylor, Am Paipear.

Sports Reporter of the Year - Eilidh Davies, BBC.

Photographer of the Year - Daniel Forsyth, Highland News and Media Ltd.

Reporter of the Year (Jim Love Memorial Trophy) - Alasdair Fraser, Highland News and Media Ltd.

Feature Writer of the Year - Susy Macaulay, Press and Journal.

Community Newspaper of the Year - Loch a Tuath News.

Newspaper of the Year - Stornoway Gazette.

Diageo Journalist of the Year - Sarah Sutherland, Orcadian.

Barron Trophy for Lifetime Achievement - Jim Tait, Shetland Times.
