THE man who spearheaded the team behind the creation of the newly-built Gleaner Arena at Lesser Borough Briggs has been named Elgin's community champion.

Elgin Sports Community Trust chairman Dave Allen was named community champion at the Elgin BID Awards at the town hall on Friday night.

Mr Allen gratefully received the award but insisted winning it was a team effort.

He said: "It's really humbling. I feel a bit uneasy accepting the award on my own, because it's a huge team effort.

"It's lovely to be nominated but it's a team award for what we have done.

"It's an indication on us delivering on what we said we were going to deliver and this is just the start for Elgin Sports Community Trust. I'm very excited about where we are going to go from here."

Meanwhile, nine other awards were given out at the ceremony – including the Ian Widdowson Individual Customer Service Award which went to Idrees Sarwar of Tech Cave Electronics.

Mr Sarwar, who has been helping people throughout the pandemic, said: "I'm very chuffed, I've got a smile on my face and I've probably had a smile on my face for a while now.

"It shows me there are people that care about this business that are there for me.

"I was surprised by the award win – there was a lot of competition. Even being given the opportunity to be here put a smile on my face."
