Junners Toy Shop demolition on Elgin’s South Street begins

The demolition of a toy shop that has lay empty in the centre of Elgin for nearly a decade has begun.

Workers from Robertson’s have been outside Junners Toy Shop for a number of days, with the area cordoned off and the pavement closed.

Junners shut its doors for the final time at the start of 2016 after 116 years of trading in the town.

Once a must-visit destination for generations of Moray children, the South Street building fell into a state of disrepair after shutting.

However, plans to give the building new life arrived as part of the Moray Growth Deal.

The demolition of Junners is part of the first stage of the South Street regeneration project, which will see a ground level clearance around several properties on both South Street and Elgin High Street.

The old Jailhouse Nightclub and Newmarket Bar will also be demolished.

The project is a partnership between Moray Council, Robertson Property Ltd, Moray Growth Deal and UHI Moray.

It will deliver 38 one and two bedroom flats, a business enterprise hub, three commercial retail units and improved public spaces linking South Street and the High Street.
