A domestic abuser who repeatedly tried to throttle his partner during a three year campaign of violent and aggressive behaviour has been jailed.

Ben Brown of Old Bridge Court, Forres, was imprisoned for two years at Inverness Sheriff Court over the offences.

Sheriff Sara Matheson also ordered the 42-year-old to avoid all contact with his victim for five years.

A jury previously found Brown guilty of a lengthy charge that detailed the woman's suffering - which endangered her life - at properties in Buckie and Elgin between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2023.

The Sheriff told Brown there was no alternative to a prison sentence "due to the nature and extent of your conduct and the effect on your partner which was profound."

Last month, the jury had been told that the man would consistently shout, swear and act aggressively towards his victim.

He would slam his fists on tables; throw furniture and smash household items; repeatedly strike doors the terrified woman had hidden behind and throw the contents of a mop bucket and a vase over her.

The jury heard his behaviour escalated into more violence, repeatedly applying pressure to her neck which restricted her breathing; repeatedly punch and kick her until she was unconscious; and push her body against broken glass.

He also ripped off her nightdress leaving her naked and provided her with an overdose of her medication all to her injury and danger of her life.

Defence counsel Bill Adam told the court: "He does feel ashamed. But it was a toxic relationship."
