IT'S that time of year again with Christmas around the corner and the launch of The Northern Scot's Toy and Food Appeal for 2018.

For more than 20 years readers have generously given what they can to help make Christmas a bit more special for those in need.

The appeal, organised in conjunction with the Moray Council social work department, begins on Friday with donations of toys, books, games, puzzles, CDs, DVDs, sports equipment and toiletries all needed.

Non-perishable food items including bottles, tinned goods, dried goods, soups and preserves will also be gratefully received.

Last year more than 300 individuals in the Moray Council area received festive donations as part of the initiative.

Linda Commons, the appeal co-ordinator, said Scot readers always rise to the challenge.

She added: "This year we would be so grateful for any gift donations for the elderly such as slippers, toys for children and money donations for parents to buy children's clothes."

Lorraine Smith, who also co-ordinates the appeal, said: "We are looking for the usual scores of donations this year as we have previously, every year we just receive more and more. We are so grateful to all the readers who give generously every year."

Donations can be handed into The Northern Scot office, Grampian Furnishers, Macrae and Dick in Elgin; Scotmid in Bishopmill; the New Elgin Post Office; Moravian Motors and Buckie Furniture in Buckie; Ian Watt in Lossiemouth; Forres Post Office; The Deli Shop in Keith; Frank Ogg and Son in Aberlour and Christies the chemist in Fochabers.
