The launch of annual Doric Boards New Year Awards scheme, supported by Scottish Government funding, offers funds to creative projects and individuals who promote and bring the tongue to life across the north-east and aims to support a sustainable, dynamic future for Doric as a vibrant language

Awards of up to £1000 are available to applicants based in the north-east, where they meet the boards wider objectives, which are the promotion of the language, traditions and culture of the north-east.

Since being elected as MSP for Banffshire and Buchan Coast, Karen Adam has championed Doric in the Scottish Parliament, having lodged a motion written in Doric during the Fraserburgh Doric month. She has now lodged a motion highlighting the launch of the Doric Boards New Year Awards scheme.

Ms Adam said: “The renaissance of Doric is a testament to the hard work and ingenuity of many people in the north-east.

"Across the region and in Banffshire and Buchan Coast we have the Doric Board, Fraserburgh Doric month, and Iona Fyfe from Oor Vyce, which are all excellent examples of this hard work and creativity.

“The Doric Board’s New Year Awards is an excellent project that will be an invaluable part of ensuring our language continues to thrive, particularly because it aims to enhance our unique linguistic and cultural confidence up here.

“As the MSP for Banffshire and Buchan Coast, this motion is a wee token of appreciation from me to recognise the work in the community from the Doric Board and the individuals behind this who are nurturing our identity as Doric speakers in the north-east.”

Her motion reads: That the parliament celebrates the launch of the Doric Board New Year Awards 2022, which is an awards scheme that it believes will be an invaluable part of the ongoing Scots' renaissance in the north-east, in the Banffshire and Buchan Coast constituency and beyond; notes that grants of up to £1000 will be made available to qualifying applicant projects; encourages all who qualify to participate in this project and join this celebration of the north east's heritage of Doric language, music, history and lore, and wishes everyone involved with it continued success.
