Drivers warned to expect repeat of 3 mile tailbacks on A96 near Elgin caused by temporary traffic lights

Drivers on the A96 were hit by lengthy delays earlier today after reports of three-mile tailbacks near Elgin.

The traffic build-up is being blamed on the use of manually operated temporary traffic lights on the town’s Linkwood Road.

Motorists are being warned that the lights, in use as part 15-month-long works to install pedestrian crossings, will also be operational tomorrow (Thursday) with the potential for further delays and tailbacks through the day.

Reports earlier today suggested there were queues for up to three miles in a northbound direction, with cars queued as far as Lhanbryde.

By early evening, Traffic Scotland’s ‘heat maps’ were still showing slow moving but much lighter traffic.

An Amey spokeswoman said: “To ensure the safety of roadworkers and motorists, temporary traffic lights were required near Reiket Lane Roundabout due to the ongoing Elgin active travel scheme works.

“This traffic management was in place to allow the delivery of materials at the required time.

“The temporary traffic lights will be required again tomorrow – Thursday August 8.

“Drivers should be aware that this lane reduction may lead to increased journey time.”
