Motorists in Fochabers, Keith and Cullen were caught driving this weekend while either drunk or under the influence of drugs.

Police Scotland say they charged five drivers and arrested four more during a series of patrols across the North East.

Stops were made in Fochabers, Peterhead, Aberdeen, Inverurie, Keith, Old Meldrum and Cullen.

Inspector Lorraine Mackie, of the police's road policing unit, called it "shocking" that so many motorists seemed to think it acceptable to still drive while under the influence.

He added: "Drink or drug driving can result in deaths and horrific life-changing injuries not only to the drivers but other road users.

"The legal limit is 22 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

"Anyone caught exceeding this faces a minimum of 12 month ban, a criminal record, a substantial fine and potentially the loss of their vehicle.

"Drugs remain in your system for a significant period and they also impair your driving skills

"We will continue to focus on detecting drivers who flout the law without a care for others.

"Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

"If you know or suspect anyone is drink or drug driving, report the matter on 101.

"Alternatively, an anonymous report can also be made by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
