A mechanic anxious to get back to his fellow bikers at last year's Thunder in the Glen motorbike rally drove at 110mph.

Nigel Campbell of Eilean Donan Way, Elgin appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court earlier today.

He admitted driving carelessly on the A9 near Daviot on August 25, 2019.

A fine of £525 was imposed and he was banned from driving for four and a half months.

Defence solicitor Rory Gowans told the court that his client had "not so much as a parking ticket" in his life.

Mr Gowans added: "He had been to Culloden and was returning to Aviemore.

"He joined the A9 and accelerated too hard in a moment of enthusiasm."

Sheriff Gary Aitken, who used to be a prosecutor, told Campbell that he should have known better than to drive at such a speed on two wheels.

He said: "I have spent a number of years dealing with the aftermath of motor-cycle accidents.

"This could have had a devastating impact on you or others, physically and emotionally."
