FOR the first time since World War Two, Elgin Burns Club will not be hosting a traditional Burns supper this year.

The club usually hosts an event at the Mansefield Hotel in Elgin, which between 100 and 120 people attend.

Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has put paid to that this year – but the club is determined to ensure Burns Night does not pass quietly on January 25 and has organised a virtual celebration.

The club's committee has come together to create a 30-minute film of Burns' Highland Tour, which will be available to members and guests alike.

DVDs of the short film have been produced, while an online link will be available at the cost of £5.

Elgin Burns Club's secretary Neil Urquhart said: "We have made a film with various members of the committee cataloguing Burns' famous Highland Tour.

"It was filmed in different parts of the country – including at Brodie Castle – last year.

"The club has met every year since World War Two so we wanted to mark the occasion and keep momentum going.

"We didn't want to let the challenges everyone is facing during this pandemic stop us.

"The sentiment we wanted to carry forward is that, while we can’t meet physically, we can be together to celebrate Burns's legacy"

"Hopefully people enjoy the film and can learn a little something."

The film comprises just a part of Elgin Burns Club's evening schedule.

The virtual Burns Night – being held on Monday, January 25, as is tradition – will start with club president Donald Lunan saying a few words to those attending on video-calling website Zoom at around 6.30pm.

Everyone will have their own supper thereafter – although the Burns Club has set a suggested menu of scotch broth, haggis and cranachan.

The film will then be watched by all, with the night ending with another Zoom gathering and another few words from Mr Lunan.

Those interested in joining in with the night, or who are looking to become members, should get in touch with Elgin Burns Club via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Elgin-Burns-Club-391709444968305.

No great knowledge of Robert Burns is required, just an interest.
