MORE than 50 gravestones have been desecrated and a hedge set on fire during a spate of vandalism at a Moray graveyard.

Community leaders have described as "sick and mindless" the perpetrators of the attack, which centred on the old part of Elgin Cemetery.

Police were called to investigate after grave diggers found dozens of upturned and damaged stones and crosses.

Moray Council's lands and parks officer, Ken Kennedy, said: "I have difficulty in understanding why people would do that.

"It will be a shock to the families to learn that somebody has deliberately knocked these stones down.

"It it was one stone then accidents do happen but if it is more than 40 in a row or in a short space of time, that's more than just an accident."

Elgin City South Councillors John Divers said those involved should think about the devastating impact their actions have.

And fellow councillor Graham Leadbitter said: "This is nothing more than a selfish act of mindless vandalism."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Grampian Police on 0845 600 5700 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
