Moray Playhouse manager Martin Thomson welcomes a major investment at the central Elgin cinema.

MAJOR investment at the Moray Playhouse Cinema has been confirmed ahead of its 80th anniversary celebrations.

Upwards of £500,000 is going into the High Street attraction, bringing 3D technology and state-of-the-art sound and projection facilities, as well as new carpets and seating.

Manager Martin Thomson hopes Cinema One could be completely refurbished by mid-November – 80 years since the Moray Playhouse first opened its doors.

That year, ‘Shanghai Express’ and ‘Grand Hotel’ were flickering on the big screen. Now, it will be James Bond’s latest outing, ‘Skyfall’, drawing crowds.

Under the investment by parent company Cairnstar Limited, a licence has been obtained so cinema-goers can enjoy an alcoholic drink while watching the latest hit.

It is hoped the top-of-the-range technology and modern surroundings will stop spending leakage to other cities, including Inverness.

Martin Thomson, manager at Moray Playhouse, said he was pleased to be part of a company investing heavily in central Elgin.

"The company is investing money in all our businesses in Elgin to try and give people a better experience," he said.
