Elgin Darby and Joan Club celebrates its 75th anniversary

A social group for OAPs has celebrated its 75th anniversary in style.

The Darby and Joan Club was first formed in Elgin during 1949 by the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service.

Moira Webb, who’s been involved for the past three decades, said: “Our members are mostly in their 80s and 90s – with two members 96 years young and still attending the club weekly.

“The club meets for a cup of tea and a blether. There’s also entertainment, bingo and an occasional outing.

“But to celebrate our anniversary we had a buffet lunch this Tuesday and will be having a raffle on the same day next week.”

The club, which is run by volunteers, met for more than 40 years at the community centre in Elgin.

Nowadays, its weekly venue every Tuesday afternoon is the Free Church on Elgin’s South Street.
