STAFF at a family-owned Elgin firm have boosted local charity Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation by a massive £12,000 after a year-long fundraising effort.

Last year whisky specialist Gordon & MacPhail held a series of events and activities to raise money for their chosen charity for 2019. These included a climb by 16 colleagues on Ben Nevis led by managing director Ewen Mackintosh.

The team also organised craft sales, "dress down" days, raffles and quizzes.

Elgin-based charity Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation was set up to provide support for children affected by cancer across the UK after vivacious Elgin teenager Abbie Main passed away, aged just 15, on Christmas Day 2017 after living with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, for more than four years.

The charity in her name aims to "spread Abbie’s Sparkle" to help brighten a child’s day through giving out "sparkles" such as gifts, holidays or grants.

Jodie Clayton, HR generalist at Gordon & MacPhail, said: "We are honoured to have supported Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation as our charity of the year in 2019.

"I know I speak on behalf of all of my colleagues when I say we’re delighted to have raised £12,000, the proceeds of which will be used to help the charity offer its support in putting a smile on the faces of children who have been diagnosed with cancer across the UK.

"The whole team at Gordon & MacPhail is committed to fundraising for a different charity each year, helping to make a difference to local organisations and support the wider community."

Abbie’s mum, Tammy Main, who leads Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation, said: "We are overwhelmed and so grateful for the amazing support we have had from our community and beyond. Thank you so much to all at Gordon & MacPhail for choosing to support Abbie's Sparkles this year and for making such an effort to raise these fantastic funds in various ways.

"To date, Abbie has given gifts and grants to 305 children and opened her own holiday home in Aviemore. Its purpose is to provide a holiday for children affected by cancer, to give an opportunity to have fun and make magical memories.

"We have realised Abbie is the sparkle in Abbie's Sparkle Foundation. She created the charity herself and it is her inspiration that continues to motivate young and old to raise money towards 'hospitals and stuff' – in Abbie’s words.

"Without funds we wouldn't be able to do Abbie's work, so we hope everyone at Gordon & MacPhail feels very much part of what has been achieved."

In 2018 the company raised £8,200 for the Moray Mental Health & Wellness Centre, its chosen charity that year.
