ELGIN has emerged as one of nine areas in Scotland that could get its own local television station.

The UK Government has published a list of 65 locations across the UK in the running for local services, to be licensed and broadcast on Digital Terrestrial Television (Freeview).

Local support for each of the area’s will be gauged by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) before licences are awarded, with the first tranche of 10 to 15 expected next year.?

Other Scottish areas shortlisted include Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, Inverness, Falkirk, the area around Greenock, and part of Ayrshire.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt is expected to host a series of events in major cities around the UK to explain how local TV could benefit communities.

Moray’s MP and MSP, Angus Robertson and Richard Lochhead, have welcomed Elgin’s inclusion as a "Pioneer Location", but said rural Scotland needs to be better served.
