Elgin raises record amount for Poppy Scotland
This year’s Poppy Scotland appeal in Elgin has raised a record total of £29,918.36 – beating last year by £684.
Since local statistics were started in 1988 the full amount raised within Elgin and its surrounding community has now reached the figure of £511,358.59.
Lieutenant Colonel David Broadfoot MBE, a former Gordon Highlander, is the chairman of Elgin's Poppy Scotland committee.
He said: “This amazing amount has been achieved by a hard working committee, a large group of volunteers and, above all, the generosity of the people of Elgin.
“As a result, year on year, we punch above our weight with communities of similar, and in some cases larger, size.
“Thanks must go to so many, in particular all the businesses who take on our poppy tins for two weeks every year, and to the major stores of Tesco, Asda and M&S who allow us to set up stands throughout the second week.
“In addition, we are indebted to RAF Lossiemouth whose total integration into our community gives us such wonderful support. We owe them so much, particularly when they are so busy on operational deployments.
“It is always wonderful as well to have support from our younger members from the Naval, Army and Airforce cadets, the Police Scotland Youth Volunteers and the pupils of Gordonstoun School.
“Finally, having collected all our donations, we cannot thank the staff of Virgin Money enough as they count the many tins and buckets we hand to them.”
