A THIEF who was caught by a mobile phone application was jailed for 18 months today.

The new technology was used after Leam Cameron (37) stole an iPhone from an unlocked house in Elgin on August 1.

The owner of the phone had an application which could trace it and that led police to a block of flats on Covesea Road in Elgin.

Officers could still hear the phone ringing and found it in a recycling bin belonging to Cameron's accommodation there.

Sheriff Margaret Neilson rejected a community-based disposal when Cameron appeared via video link for sentencing at Inverness Sheriff Court.

He had previously admitted theft from two properties between July 31 and August 1 and sentence had been deferred for a background report and a drug treatment assessment.

Defence solicitor Grant Daglish told the court: "He accepts he has to change his ways. He stressed to me that now is the time to show he is willing to change. He wants a life away from crime."

But Sheriff Neilson told Cameron: "You have a shocking record and only a custodial sentence is appropriate."

She backdated the sentence to August 3, when Cameron was remanded in custody.

The court was told of Cameron's other crimes. The occupiers of a property in Balmoral Terrace, Elgin, left a door unlocked and discovered missing items the following morning. Amongst the stolen goods were purses with £70 in cash, bank cards and a box of foreign coins.

On the same morning, a couple in Harrison Terrace noticed their back door was open and that a wallet was missing. Fiscal depute Robert Weir said that further checks revealed missing car keys and an iPhone.

He added that all the stolen goods were recovered by police when they searched Cameron's flat.
