SCOTRAIL'S Elgin to Inverness train service has been suspended as heavy rain hits much of the north-east.

Network Rail announced last night that a speed limit of 40mph would be introduced for trains due to impending "heavy and prolonged" rainfall.

With this limit in place, many services have been delayed – with the local Elgin-Inverness service suspended.

It's still possible to get to travel between Elgin and Inverness on the Aberdeen-Inverness train, although services are subject to delays.

A ScotRail spokesperson said: "Speed restrictions due to forecast heavy and prolonged rainfall between Aberdeen and Inverness, Inverness and Wick and Aberdeen and Montrose means changes to some services this morning.

"Our Edinburgh/Glasgow – Aberdeen, Aberdeen-Inverness services will be delayed and we've had to suspend our Inverness-Elgin and Inverurie-Montrose local services.

"If you're affected by this, you can use ScotRail tickets and Smartcards on Stagecoach North services between Inverness-Aberdeen (10, 10B, 31, 35 and 37). Insch station isn't covered by these arrangements."
