An uncle and his teenage nephew have been sentenced for beating up two men.

John Geddes, aged 38, of Maisondieu Road, Elgin appeared from custody at Inverness Sheriff Court on Tuesday via a video link.

Physically present in the court building was Tyler Gilbert (19) of Barlink Road, Elgin.

Geddes had helped his teenage nephew "take revenge" after another man had allegedly chatted up a young female friend.

Geddes admitted carrying out the assault in a house on February 10.

He repeatedly headbutted his victim, pinned him to the ground and threatened him with further violence if he told the police.

Meanwhile, Gilbert pleaded guilty to assaulting a second man who had been drinking with the first.

The teenager struck him on the head and body during the attack which lasted about 20 minutes.

Defence solicitor Stephen Carty said that, until the incident, Geddes had been "making good strides" with his drug problem.

Mr Carty added: "For long periods he had his life on track, but he has gone off the rails and when he does, it is in a spectacular way."

The 38-year-old was jailed for a year.

Gilbert's defence agent, solicitor advocate Mike Chapman told Sheriff Sara Matheson: "It appears what led to this incident was inappropriate behaviour by a much older man towards my client's friend.

"It nagged him for some time and he was fuelled by drink and drugs."

Sheriff Matheson imposed a restriction of liberty order on Gilbert who has to wear a tag for the next six months and remain in his home between the hours of 7pm and 5am.

The teenager was also placed under social work supervision for 20 months.
