A travel website dedicated to "the unexpected and overlooked" has included Elgin's Dandy Lion in its global index.

Atlas Obscura, which has nearly 1.5million followers online, calls the statue a "baffling beast".

The US-based site continues: "It’s a shockingly absurd addition to a town known for its medieval ruins."

It also speculates that the 10ft statue, which was erected in 2016, may be the "most hated" in Scotland.

However, the popular website then goes on to wonder whether the Dandy Lion is slowly worming its way into the community's heart.

Atlas Obscura says: "Passers-by can’t resist snapping photos of the dapper beast."

The online travel website was founded in 2009 with the stated mission of cataloguing eccentric and unusual sites from all over the world.
