Amey accused of giving ‘endless excuses’ amid ongoing Keith Union Bridge repair works on A96
A contractor responsible for repairing a bridge on the A96 through a Moray town has been slammed for failing to provide “further answers” as to when the now delayed works will be completed.
Highlands and Islands MSP Douglas Ross met with Amey to discuss the ongoing works at the Union Bridge in Keith but the former Scottish Conservatives leader and Moray MP was left “deeply frustrated”.
Temporary traffic lights have been in place at the bridge since July 21, 2024, when a retaining wall fell into the River Isla.
Amey began repairs at the start of March with the original aim of having them finished by mid-May.
But the works have been delayed on multiple occasions with the latest due to the unexpected discovery of an old wastewater chamber.
Mr Ross says his meeting with Amey raised more questions than answers and accused the company of giving “endless excuses”.
He says they could not confirm when the works will be finished.
“I went into it in good faith hoping that Amey would see the need to finally be upfront with Keith residents and businesses about these works,” Mr Ross said.
“Instead we continued to just get endless excuses and no further answers. It is shocking they still cannot confirm that the latest planned date for completion at the end of July will be met.
“There seems to be no contrition for the huge errors that have been made during these works or the failure to be transparent over things that have somehow only recently been discovered.
“Residents and businesses in Keith are simply not buying what Amey is saying any longer. They just want these works finished and for normality to return.
“I will continue to push Amey at every opportunity to guarantee that there will be no further delays to these works and for businesses to receive the compensation for their losses that they deserve.”
