A96 fatal car crash victim was retired Dounreay worker who had just returned from Turkey holiday
A retired woman who had just returned from holiday was the victim of a fatal road crash on the A96.
Dounreay worker Alison Campbell, from Glengolly, near Thurso, was returning home with her husband John after a holiday in Turkey when their red Vauxhall Insignia was involved in a collision with a van a mile east of the turn-off for Inverness Airport early on Tuesday afternoon.
Mrs Campbell, who was 65, was pronounced dead at the scene while her 69-year-old husband was seriously injured.
He was taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness where his condition is described as critical.
The driver of the white Ford Transit Tipper van was uninjured.
Two fire appliances from Inverness and Nairn were called out to the accident which led to a lengthy closure of the main road while police carried out an investigation.
Sergeant Kate Finlayson has appealed for witnesses or drivers with dash cam footage to get in touch.
She said: “Our thoughts are with Alison’s family and friends at this difficult time.
““Enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the crash are ongoing. I’d like to thank everyone who has provided information so far and ask anyone else who saw what happened or has dash-cam footage to come forward.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2130 of 22 July, 2025.
